Then I Saw You is a great choice for when you want to read a book that you don’t have to think too hard about or commit to for too long. Whether you’re like me and currently sitting by the heater as it’s the middle of winter, or if you’re lucky enough to be sitting by the pool on the warmer side of the world, either way this is the sort of book that you can curl up with and just while away the afternoon. And if you want to add a little ‘mood’ to that relaxation, there’s a ‘Then I Saw You’ playlist available on Spotify to keep you company, too.
Kaitlynn is a neonatal nurse in the NICU ward, working with newborn and premature babies. Working a shift in the ER to fill in for someone who called in sick, she meets Marshall. He has brought his baby son to the hospital and Kaitlynn is the nurse that is there to help them.
They meet again when a mutual friend (aka Marshall’s cousin & roommate) invites Kaitlynn over to their home for dinner. From there Kaitlynn and Marshall begin a friendship that blossoms into something more. But each of them has their own obstacles that they have to deal with on the path to their romance.
Marshall is a fire fighter and Kaitlynn’s father is his Captain in the fire department, as well as his mentor. For Marshall, respect for her father puts a major stumbling block in the way of a relationship. As far as he’s concerned, being the Captain’s daughter means she is ‘one hundred percent off limits’.
For Kaitlynn, the issue is Marshall’s job. Kaitlynn was injured in the fire that killed her mother and since then she has wanted nothing to do with firefighters, having made herself a vow to never date one. And at first, she doesn’t realise what Marshall’s job is. But once she does find out, her attraction to Marshall is strong enough at first that she ignores her misgivings in order to begin something with him. But this doesn’t mean she won’t struggle.
Thrown into the mix is baby AJ. Marshall has only known that he’s a dad for a few days when he first meets Kaitlynn. While they are learning about each other, he’s also learning at the same time about being a dad.
There’s just something special about a book-dad that dotes on their baby, and Marshall is no exception. I really liked his character and found myself cheering for him. I didn’t dislike Kaitlynn, but I wasn’t as drawn to her as I was to him. The book is written in alternating points of view from both characters and I looked forward to his chapters just that little bit more, as I found him a little bit easier to relate to.
But there is one other important member of the cast that I had no trouble relating to at all. He might have only have a small part overall, but his butt is, for me, a scene stealer. And that is Spencer, Kaitlynn’s corgi. I, along with Kaitlynn, think that a wiggling corgi butt is very cute!
Then I Saw You isn’t an overly long book and I read it in only two sittings. I did see the stumbling block in their relationship well before it happened, but that didn’t detract at all from the story. It moved along at a really good pace and kept my interest the whole way. I enjoyed how easy it was to read, and I especially appreciated that for a shorter story, it still managed to be really well paced – it moved along well with no rushed sections or skipped moments.
