Reckless by A.J. Merlin – Book review

Published: 23 April 2021
Series: The Prowl Trilogy Book One
Pages: 338
Warnings: Language, reverse harem, MMF

Maned wolf shifter Alek Sawyer is a pro at landing on her feet. From being dropped into foster care as a child, to tripping over her hopeless romantic tendencies as a teenager, she’s an omega with no need of an alpha or a pack. With a curvy figure and a mean right hook, she’s also not the omega that most alphas expect her to be.

But Hades, Roman, and Wilder aren’t ‘most alphas.’ When Alek is unexpectedly and irrevocably drawn to the exhibitionist panther, the quiet but firm coyote, and the secretive dire wolf, she can’t help but be reminded of the fairy tale romance she’s always wanted. But when things start heating up, she starts to realize her day dreams are drifting to some darker corners than she remembers. Corners with collars and cuffs and a strong dominating presence.

But her new romance isn’t all kinky games and bdsm parties. Her new alphas come with secrets of their own and lead lives that Alek has never considered for herself. At the end of the day, will their sudden and powerful connection be enough to keep them together?

Or will their pasts, or Alek’s own skeletons, force them apart?

Alek is a woman ( /maned wolf) with a big attitude. And I loved her! She is confident and strong, and she stands up for what she believes in. Throughout Reckless we slowly learn about Alek’s past, and she hasn’t had it easy. But it has taught her to stand up for herself and she does that with determination!

When Reckless first starts, Alek is working in a coffee shop, but as an omega, she finds the attitude of many of the alpha customers hard to take. When an opportunity to take a job working with her cousin Noah at the cam studio Prowl comes comes up, she jumps at it. It doesn’t hurt that cam star Hades Ahlleron (who she has a HUGE crush on) works there, either. And when she actually meets Hades for the first time, his scent overcomes her and she virtually loses the power of speech!

Alek has a fairly negative opinion of most alphas and isn’t really looking to find one (or more) of her own. So, when she joined her housemate for a night out at a kink dungeon, she was there just for a night out to spend time with friends, nothing more. But when a casual stroll throughout the place to investigate brings her into the path of yet another alpha with a scent just as affecting as Hades, she finds herself drawn in by him. And so begins her relationship with Roman.

And then because starting something new with two men at once isn’t enough, Alek adds a third. When she goes to the assistance of another omega in need, only to find herself benefitting from a bit of help herself (but she’d be the first to point out that she didn’t really need the help), Wilder comes into the picture. And her trio of alphas is created. Now all she has to do is decide what to do with them!

This is my third AJ Wilder book, and one thing I love about them all is that nothing is off limits, or taboo. I’m not normally a fan of reverse harems or kink scenes, but these topics in AJ Wilder’s books are so calmly handled that I barely notice them as unusual for me. Everyone is accepted, no-one is looked at as being different, and things that would normally be hidden are totally out in the open. Hades is a great example of this – he is a megastar, famous everywhere, with millions subscribing to his content. And how did he get famous? He’s a porn star. A porn star that millions admire and want to be like. I love this aspect of AJ Wilder’s books!

There is quite a lot going on in this book, with side stories for many of the characters going on all around, as well as Alek herself having plenty happening to keep her busy. But underneath it all, there is a really strong undercurrent of old-fashioned romance. The three men in Alek’s life are all (in their own way) treating her like a queen, and the relationship between the three of them builds really sweetly.

I’m really glad that Reckless is the first of a trilogy, as I want to find out what happens to others in the book! Alek’s cousin Noah is at the top of this list, as I really liked him. And Rita, proprietor of Prowl, feels to me like she has real potential for more. I’m looking forward to number two in the Prowl Trilogy!

Thank you to A.J. Merlin for sharing a copy of this e-book with me.
