Love Me Ever After by Julie Archer – Book review

He didn’t believe second chances had consequences. Until now.

Sharing a house with his ex was the last thing Mason Miles expected when he came back home. After nearly eighteen months away, he finds himself in the spotlight at work with a career that’s threatening to go stratospheric.

Moving in with Ems was the easy option, although it seems she’s determined to make it hard for him at first – in more ways than one. But he soon realises he can’t let her slip through his fingers again.

For Ems Berry, sharing a house with Mason, more ripped and tattooed than when they were last together, is massively testing her willpower. Until one night of passion in the wrong place at the right time draws them back together.

When he gets a job offer he can’t refuse that will take him away again, can their newly reestablished relationship survive? Especially with the added complication of a baby on the way…

Love Me Ever After is a standalone roommates romance where a second chance and an accidental pregnancy could just change your life forever.

Love Me Ever After starts out by sharing with us how Mason comes to share a home with his ex-girlfriend, Ems. Corresponding situations at home for both Ems and Mason line up to mean that she needs a new house-mate at the same time that he needs a new home, friends put in their two cents worth and voila! We have Mason and Ems sharing a house.

These two used to be a couple, until Mason accepted a secondment in New York, leaving Ems behind. While there was no big angry breakup, Ems was certainly left with mixed feelings in relation to Mason. But it doesn’t take long, once the two of them are back in each others space, for things to move along pretty rapidly and they decide to give it a try as a couple again.

Behind the rekindling of these two’s love story, there runs the background theme at all times of the pair of them valuing their careers highly. Ems is an event planner, with a busy schedule of events and she gives a lot of attention to making it a success. Along with this, Mason is also focussed on his career. This was, after all, what separated them in the first place. And when Mason is offered an opportunity to further his career even more, he is torn whether to prioritise his career or his relationship.

At the start of Love Me Ever After, my first impressions of Mason were that he was a bit shallow, self-involved, not much depth. While he did manage to convince me otherwise as the story went along, at times he did try to sway me back towards my first impression. Especially when considering his tendency to ‘forget’ to call Ems, while travelling for work. Really? As someone who regularly tgravels for work myself, I don’t generally forget for days at a time that I have a husband at home. But perhaps that’s just me. This definitely wasn’t one of Mason’s more endearing features to me.

While I certainly enjoyed this story, there were many points where I became quite annoyed with Love Me Ever After. I felt like I was reading a book that should have been selling advertising space to alcoholic beverage companies, as it seemed that every time any of the characters did anything, their first thought was what they would be drinking while they did it. Alcohol was a part of everything. I’m certainly not opposed to characters in stories having a drink or three, but this was more like thirty-three. It felt excessive to me and my annoyance at times distracted me from parts of the story that I was enjoying more.

I didn’t find Love Me Ever After to be the sort of story that will leave a lasting impression on me, but it held my attention and had me invested in the characters. It was an easy read to keep me company for a quiet winter afternoon on the couch, snuggled up with my blanket.

Thanks to The Indie Pen and Julie Archer for sharing a copy of this ebook with me.

Author of contemporary romance featuring rock stars, small towns, a healthy dose of angst, some steamy times and always a happy ever after!

When not writing, I can usually be found binge watching teen drama series on Netflix, or supporting Spurs from my armchair, and running around after my two feline children, Corey and Elsa.

Real Angst. Real Romance.
