*This is a standalone book #2 in the interconnected series, The Westbrooks: Broken-Hearts.

One week. No strings. Sexy stranger. What could go wrong?

My name is Julia McDowell. I’m not the pretty girl next door, I’m the boss at work who solves all your problems. I’m an awkward genius with the worst taste in boyfriends; the last one left me with a 6-figure debt to prove it.

So, when the most swoon-worthy man alive saves me from a psychotic tree, who am I to say no to a drink? He’s sweet yet powerful with a darkness I can’t place. I should be terrified of him, but I find myself drawn to him in ways I’ve never experienced. He says I’m his guiding light, that our hearts beat to the same melody. But I’m not looking for forever, and he has his own demons to slay.

We agreed to one week, no strings. It will have to be enough. It’s definitely enough, more than enough, until it’s not.

I’m ready to throw our one-week rules out the window when tragedy pulls us apart. It would take a miracle to find our way back to each other, and life is no fairytale. With no happily ever after in sight, will our hearts learn a new rhythm? Or will heartache become our new theme song?

Has a playlist

Beat of My Heart is the second book I’ve read by Avery Maxwell and the second book in The Westbrooks Broken Heart series. And all signs are that his series just going to keep getting better as it goes along, as it has certainly started off that way!

I absolutely loved Trevor and Julia. They have a beautiful love story and we get to join them over an extended period, due to the way the book is done in three parts. While I did find that the book took a little while to get going, once it hooked me I remained hooked and didn’t want to put it down!

In part 1 of Beat of My Heart, Avery Maxwell takes us right back to before Cross My Heart (book 1) even started, and we get to see the events of that story from a different perspective. I enjoyed the way the timeline was handled, but it does go on for a while.

Part 2 will see us joining Julia and Trevor as they deal with broken hearts due to their separation, as well as how they find their way back to each other. I think this part of the book was my favourite, because I loved how well we got to be able to know each of them (thanks to alternating point of view) and their interaction with the people around them.

Part 3 is the tense part. There are things going on around them that threaten their newfound happiness and the pace of this section is fantastic.

Julia is an entertaining character. She’s hilarious! She is a certified genius, so her mind works a little differently to us ordinary type people. She has no filter, so whatever she is thinking comes straight out of her mouth. That is, until she meets trevor – he is able to calm her racing mind with just his touch.

As for Trevor, I really enjoyed his character. I found him totally relatable. He’s a man trying to do the right thing, and paying a huge personal price for it. We get to know him well, as we spend quite a bit of time inside his head, especially in the first half of the book.

Trevor is also quite a smooth talker. For those of you who like your literary men to bring a bit of sexy talk to the spicy scenes, then Trevor will be your next favourite book boyfriend!

I can’t finish talking about Beat of My Heart without talking about the other family and friends in the story. There are so many characters that go into telling Julia and Trevor’s story, and I absolutely love that they’re all fully fledged people in their own right. They each have discernible quirts and traits that we’re already getting to recognise, after only two books. I’m loving how Avery Maxwell is letting us get to know them all as we go along, as I’m finding it is adding a whole extra level of enjoyment to the stories.

As an added bonus, Avery Maxwell has also given us a Spotify playlist to go along with the story and I must say, I like her taste in music!

Thank you to Avery Maxwell for my copy of this ebook in return for my honest and unbiased review.

Avery Maxwell is an American Romance Author who loves wine, sexy stories, pizza, and her family.

Avery is a hot mess of a mom to four wildly sweet mini-humans and two fur babies. She spends far too much time in her pj’s and trips over herself multiple times a day. Accident-prone is probably a fair assessment.

Having grown up in small-town Vermont, Avery often jokes about being the most naïve person in the room. Luckily, she’s used that small-town charm to write character-driven contemporary romances that have you laughing one minute, and crying the next.

When she isn’t refereeing (three little boys require a lot of whistle blowing), or cuddled up with her real-life Prince Charming, you can find her tucked away with a bottle of wine (because those steamy scenes don’t write themselves!), or coaching her daughter’s basketball team.

Avery now lives in North Carolina where she brings life, love, and a happily ever after to every character she writes.
